Ah Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.”
Jeremiah 32:17

In Joshua 10:12–14, Israel is in the middle of battle. Joshua is pressing forward against his enemies, but the day is running out. Victory is close, yet time appears to be working against them. At that point, Joshua speaks before all Israel and calls upon the Lord, asking for the sun to stand still over Gibeon and the moon over the Valley of Aijalon.

God brought the battle to completion in a way that transcended natural limitation, showing that what he begins through his people is never left unfinished. The passage confronts the assumption that outcomes are confined to what appears reasonable within the boundaries of nature.

Then Joshua spoke to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel: ‘Sun, stand still over Gibeon; And Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.’ So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the people had revenge upon their enemies.” Joshua 10:12–13

Joshua spoke, and God extended the day so the battle could be completed. The scripture says the sun stood still “till the people had revenge upon their enemies.”

Our text reveals the partnership between divine promise and human participation. God had already declared victory, yet Joshua still had to pursue the enemy. In that decisive moment, Joshua spoke in alignment with what God was doing. This shows that faith is not passive waiting but active agreement with divine intention. Joshua’s words reflected a deep confidence that God’s purpose is not constrained by time, nature, or circumstance.

Habakkuk later testified to this event in prayer:

The sun and moon stood still in their habitation; at the light of Your arrows they went, at the shining of Your glittering spear.” Habakkuk 3:11

God is not a man. We often reduce him in our thinking and imagine him as merely a greater version of ourselves, but the scripture reveals something far higher. Human power appears impressive until it is measured against eternity. God is self-existent and dependent on nothing. He does not evolve, improve, weaken, or change. He can not be measured by human standards.

God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” Numbers 23:19

God’s power is majestic, holy, and immeasurably above creation. His authority is absolute and sovereign. He rules over nations, kings, history, salvation, and judgment. Nothing escapes his authority. What appears random to man is never outside God’s government. Even suffering, opposition, and human rebellion exist under his sovereign oversight.

This is why Paul could say with confidence:

Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:6

The God who began the work is the God who finishes it. He does not abandon his purpose halfway through. What he starts in a life, he carries to completion. Joshua saw it on the battlefield. Habakkuk remembered it in prayer. Paul applied it to the believer’s walk with Christ. The same truth still stands today: God always completes whatever he starts.

Father, this morning I acknowledge, as Job did: “I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.” So I declare that Your promises over my life and my family are true, and are coming into fruition, in Jesus’ name.

The LORD of hosts has purposed, and who will annul it? His hand is stretched out, and who will turn it back? Isaiah 14:27
