“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” Heb 10:25
We all love technology—it’s convenient. You can shoot off a text, hop on a video call, or scroll through social media. But let’s be honest, a text like “How are you?” just doesn’t hit the same as sitting with someone and really asking how they’re doing.
The early Christians understood the importance of gathering in person. Acts 2:42 tells us they “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” It wasn’t just about staying connected; it was a deliberate commitment to being physically present with one another. Sharing meals, praying together, and learning side by side created a deep sense of community. They knew that spiritual growth and encouragement came through these face-to-face interactions—something that simply can’t be fully replaced by virtual communication.
Even video calls have their limitations; they can’t fully capture the richness of body language or the spiritual atmosphere that comes from being physically present. Matt 18:20 says where two or three are gathered, God is there. Being physically present brings a whole different energy, and God works through that.
I understand where it is practically impossible and this may be the only available option; But when someone is going through a rough patch, no amount of texts or messages can substitute the power of physically showing up. Galatians 6:2 calls us to bear one another’s burdens—and often, that means being there in person. 1 Thess 5:11 urges us to build one another up, and those celebrations of life’s joys happen best face-to-face, where we can fully engage in each other’s happiness.
Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of fellowship and the reminder that we are called to gather together in your name. In a world full of technology and convenience, help us not to forget the importance of physical presence in the lives of those around us. As we see the day approaching, may we continue to encourage one another and grow stronger together as the body of Christ.
