But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.”

Jesus was discerning the superficial condition of His generation. What do you think He would make of ours?

What is wrong with modern gathering? We hardly meet face-to-face in the modern age and when we do social media has begun to replace real human interaction at all levels. At any modern gathering, phones are the real centre of attention. People are busy live-streaming, posting updates, or scrolling through their feeds, while ignoring the actual humans around them. What should be moments of genuine connection are now overshadowed by the need for digital validation.

A month ago, when my sister was here, we visited an uncle in Leeds—a 3-hour drive from home. It was supposed to be a gathering to celebrate my auntie’s birthday. But not once did we see her face, touch her, or have the chance to tell her why we travelled down—that we love and appreciate her. The event was digitally equipped, and every sequence of it was so cyber-enabled that we had no chance!

As Christians, we are called to engage in meaningful relationships, not to neglect meeting together but to spur one another on in love and good deeds. Genuine connection is vital for spiritual growth and community support. As believers, let ‘s break the demon of separation; Let us remember to be present with one another, sharing in fellowship as God intended, and seek to cultivate relationships that reflect His love and grace.

    1. Thank you for the observation. It was meant to stir conversation about the various ways technologies and modern interactions deviate from and influence our fellowship and togetherness.
