One day the evil spirit answered them, ‘Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?'” Acts 19:15

What makes a person so spiritually powerful that even demons recognise them?

Paul was unique because of his remarkable relationship with God, which made him well-known in both the spiritual and material worlds. Even though salvation is a free gift, living a life of surrender, self-denial, and commitment and making sacrifices are necessary to strengthen our connection with God. This isn’t about earning God’s love or favour, but about aligning our hearts with His will and truly knowing Him. True love is inherently sacrificial; though many can serve without love, genuine love always manifests through service and devotion, and such sacrifices are exceptional.

Before his conversion, Paul enjoyed privilege and respect as a Pharisee. Educated under the renowned Rabbi Gamaliel, he was a significant figure among the Jews and had zealously persecuted Christians, which earned him favour among Jewish leaders. However, after his encounter with Christ, he choose to leave all of this behind to serve God completely.

In Phil 3:7-8, Paul reflects on this change, saying, “But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ…”

His commitment to Christ came with significant costs. Paul endured physical suffering, including beatings, shipwrecks, and frequent imprisonments(2 Cor 11:23-28). He also faced emotional and social struggles, experiencing rejection, betrayal, and conflicts within the churches he founded (2 Cor 12:15). Despite opportunities to avoid persecution, he chose to continue his mission, even from prison (Eph 3:1 and Phile 1:9). Paul’s life was marked by relentless service and sacrifice. He was eventually martyred in Rome, but he faced his death with peace and confidence, reflecting on his journey in 2 Tim 4:6-8: “For I am already being poured out like a drink offering…”

Paul’s sacrifices and unwavering dedication exemplify the profound worth of knowing God and fulfilling His purpose. His life reminds us of the value of dedication and the ultimate reward of a life lived in faith.

Father, please help us to align our hearts with your will, to live out our faith with the same fervour and devotion. Grant us the strength to make sacrifices for the sake of your love and to serve you with sincerity and courage in Jesus’ name.
