In the soul-stirring words of Jesus, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” John 14:27. This divine inheritance emanates from the very heart of our Saviour. The profound peace generously extended by God surpasses mere concept—it’s a promise, a transformative gift meant to infuse enduring tranquillity into the fabric of our lives.

Contemplate the incredible concern Jesus had for the peace and joy of his followers just hours before his crucifixion. He was about to endure one of the most horrific means of torture ever devised, and yet, his burden was to solidify in the souls of his followers a profound sense of peace.

Isaiah 66:12-13 paints a breathtaking picture of God’s peace: “…I will extend peace to her like a river… As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.” This isn’t a mere trickle but a continuous flow of divine comfort, embracing us like a mother’s gentle warmth.

In navigating life’s challenges, recognising disturbances to our peace as influences contrary to God’s perfect design is crucial. Stand firm against negative impulses seeking to divert you from the divine path laid out. If you ever feel a distance from God, remember, lack of peace often stems from this perceived separation. Don’t give in. Cultivate a deep awareness of God’s nearness. Trust in His guidance, soak in His love, and surrender to His sovereignty. After all, Christ is Emmanuel—God with Us!

Philippians 4:5-7 becomes a soothing balm for our souls: “Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Embracing hope becomes a personal and confident journey in the promises of God, knowing that He is forever faithful. In times of uncertainty, meditating on these biblical assurances fortifies our hearts and minds, fostering a resilient spirit. Experience an increasing measure of God’s peace as you focus on His ever-abiding presence, His constant flow of love, and affirmations crafted uniquely for you. A crisis does not make a person; a crisis reveals a person. In a time of trial, you turn to what you trust. An alcoholic turns to the bottle. An addict turns to drugs. An atheist turns to the wise men. A Christian should turn to God. When trouble strikes, He is sufficient to get you through. God’s promise to His people is the peace that flows like a river in the midst of turmoil. “I will extend peace like a river” Isaiah 66:12.

In the face of challenges, remember the promise—whatever circumstances you are in or facing, maintain your focus and consciousness of His abiding presence. In this world, trials may come, but as Christ foretold, let us be cheerful still (John 16:33). Whatever problems rage against us, God’s Spirit is the ever-flowing river who sustains us and gives us gladness even while we are under siege (Psa. 46:4). His river of grace and peace flows through the middle of the city. Not that the people of God will be exempt from trouble, rather God will be with them in the midst of the troubles.

Martin Luther in his hymn recognised there is a spring that flows from the cross of Calvary that cleanses us from impurity and brings peace and healing to our broken spirits.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
