“Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ, lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.” 2 Cor 2:10-11
In this passage, the Apostle Paul addresses the Corinthians about forgiveness and reconciliation within the Christian community. The context is related to an incident that occurred in the Corinthian church. It appears that an individual caused trouble or offense within the community, prompting Paul to urge the Corinthians to forgive this person. Paul emphasises his willingness to forgive and expresses the idea that forgiveness is done in the sight of Christ and for the sake of the community. This act of forgiveness benefits not only the individual involved but also prevents Satan from taking advantage of division and strife within the church.
In verse 11, Paul mentions being aware of Satan’s schemes, indicating the spiritual battle that Christians face. By maintaining unity through forgiveness, the Corinthians can thwart Satan’s attempts to create discord and disunity among them.
Paul’s message centres on forgiveness, reconciliation, and the importance of maintaining unity within the Christian community despite challenges and offenses. The Bible teaches spiritual principles of reconciliation, honesty, and vigilance against the enemy’s tactics.
In Luke 17:1 (NIV), Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come.”‘
Every believer must maintain unity, steering clear of offenses and resisting the devil’s influence. When confronted with reasons to be offended, believers must not fall prey to the devil’s schemes.
“Therefore, each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbour, for we are all members of one body. ‘In your anger, do not sin’: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.” Eph 4:25-27
This underscores the significance of forgiveness, truthfulness, and living in a way that does not lead others astray. There’s no middle ground — it’s a choice between triumphing ‘by the blood of the Lamb and the word of your testimony’ or being enslaved by Satan.
