“For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.” 2 Cor 4:6
God, who spoke light into existence at creation—the same God who once spoke light into the void of creation—has now spoken His light into our hearts through Christ. This is the light that illuminates the very core of our being, the very presence of God Himself, manifest in the person of Jesus. It is the fullness of God’s glory and truth.
Verse 4 of our text says we were once blinded: “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” and the fact is darkness consumes its victim, overtaking every part of their being. Jesus said, ‘”But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!’” Matt 6:23. When a person is spiritually blind, the darkness within them is great because it consumes their entire being. The light (truth) they think they have is, in fact, darkness, and it leads them deeper into deception. Those who do not know God are living in rebellion against Him; there is a spirit of rebellion—the same one that once dwelled in us. Spiritual blindness is darkness that engulfs. It is as though darkness surrounds you—inside, outside, and all around.
“See, darkness covers the earth, and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you.” Isa 60:2
Darkness is over the nations, symbolising their distance from God, their oppression, their sin, and its deceitfulness. But God promises that His glory will shine upon His people, bringing light to the darkness. John 1:5 says: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
Verse 1 of Isaiah 60 says, “Arise and shine, for your light has come, and the glory of God has risen upon you.” So let us arise and shine! The light of Christ has come into our lives, and God’s glory now rests upon us. We are no longer defined by darkness, we are transformed to radiate His glory to the world. Halleluyah! His light shines in our hearts, illuminating the depths of our being and dispelling every shadow. It is the light of the knowledge of God’s glory, revealed in the face of Christ!
