As children of God, believers enjoy manifold benefits. We are welcomed into God’s family as sons and daughters, sharing in Christ’s inheritance (Romans 8:17). Through faith in Jesus Christ, we receive forgiveness for our sins and are reconciled with God (Ephesians 1:7). We have direct access to God, approaching Him with confidence, knowing we have a loving Father who cares for us (Hebrews 4:16). Furthermore, God promises to provide for His children’s needs and guide them according to His will (Matthew 6:25–34). Undoubtedly, we have the assurance of eternal life with God, experiencing His presence and glory forever (John 3:16). But interestingly, Jesus said, eternal live is to know the Father. (John 17:3)

There’s a distinction between being a child of God and fully grasping the concept of God as our Father. When people think of God as their Father, they often draw parallels with their experiences with their earthly fathers. However, it’s crucial to recognise that God’s fatherhood transcends any human understanding or comparison. Even the best human fathers fall short in comparison to the perfection and boundless love of God as our Father. While earthly fathers provide a glimpse of God’s intended design for the family unit, God’s fatherhood stands incomparable and unparalleled, offering a level of love and care that transcends human understanding.

While God established the human family as a reflection of the heavenly family on earth, His fatherhood surpasses earthly relationships in their depth and scope. God’s fatherhood is characterised by unconditional love, perfect wisdom, and boundless grace. Unlike human fathers, whose love and care may be flawed or limited, God’s love for His children is unwavering and limitless.

Understanding and embracing God’s fatherhood involves recognising His unique attributes and embracing the truth of His love and provision. It’s a relationship that goes beyond biological ties or human experiences, encompassing a deep spiritual connection with the Creator of the universe.

Through the week, we look at some of the expressions of God’s fatherhood.
Confidence and assurance:
The Bible assures us that, as children of God, we have the privilege of calling Him our Father. In Matthew 7:11, Jesus says, “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him?” This teaches us that just as earthly fathers care for their children, our Heavenly Father watches over us with unwavering love and concern. This awareness breeds confidence in His ability to guide, protect, and provide for us in every circumstance. We can rest assured that His plans for us are for our welfare and not for harm, to give us a future and hope (Jeremiah 29:11).

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17

Heavenly Father, thank you for the privilege of calling you our Father. Your love surpasses all understanding, and your care for us is boundless. We trust in your provision and guidance, knowing that every good gift comes from you. Help us to rest in your promise of a future and hope. Grant us wisdom and courage to follow your will, reflecting your love and grace in all we do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
