“Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.'” Mark 6:31
Retreat and renewal are vital aspects of the Christian faith. Regularly renewing your strength and motivation is necessary to maintain effectiveness over time. Jesus often withdrew to solitary places to pray and rest (Mark 1:35; Luke 5:16).
Jesus valued moments to maintain His relationship with the Father, gain strength, and receive direction for His ministry. I believe the Sabbath, a day of rest instituted by God, was designed for physical rest and spiritual reflection (Exo 20:8-11).
Just as Jesus found it necessary to retreat for spiritual refreshment, we must also consider regular times of spiritual renewal. Seeking quiet and solitude to rejuvenate spiritually and mentally is essential.
Find a time when you are least likely to be interrupted. Early mornings or late evenings are often good options. Turn off your phone, and avoid other distractions that might pull you away from your time of rest and reflection. Begin your quiet time with prayer, asking God to quiet your heart and speak to you. The psalmist said to his soul, “come to your rest oh my soul” (Psa 116:7). Spend time in silence, listening for God’s voice. This might feel uncomfortable at first, but with practice, it becomes a powerful way to connect with God.
Resting in the quiet place is a skill that takes time to develop. Be patient with yourself as you learn to quiet your mind and focus on God. Don’t be discouraged if your mind wanders or if you struggle to find peace. Simply bring your focus back to God and continue. Sincerely, this practice will enrich your spiritual life and enhance your relationship with God.
