“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.” James 3:17-18
Have you ever met a colleague, after several years since you left work, who testifies that if you hadn’t adhered to your testimony and walked in wisdom and integrity as a believer, they wouldn’t have come to faith in Jesus? I have heard many such testimonies. Pro 11:18 says, that “The wicked man does deceptive work, but he who sows righteousness will have a sure reward.”
Our text concludes that applying godly wisdom will reap a “harvest of righteousness,” which refers to the abundant blessings that come from living a life aligned with God’s wisdom and peace. It reflects the spiritual fruits that moral integrity produces when we live in obedience to God and foster peace among others. Verse 13 and 14 of same chapter of James says, “Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.“
Joseph’s life is a powerful reflection of sowing righteousness and reaping a harvest of blessings and fulfilment. Despite being sold into slavery by his brothers and later wrongfully imprisoned, Joseph continued to act with integrity and faith in God. His righteousness, patience, and trust in God ultimately led to a harvest of blessings, both for him and for others. He was exalted to a position of power in Egypt and was able to save not only Egypt but also his own family from famine. His testimony was: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” Gen 50:20
After Joseph reveals his identity to his brothers in Genesis 45, the Bible shows how his brothers, who once betrayed him, recognised God’s hand in Joseph’s life. Walking in godly wisdom enriches our relationships, results in a flourishing community, and fosters a deeper connection to God. Though the entire world may have forgotten what Joseph did, God did not. He saw every act of righteousness, every moment of faith, and He honoured Joseph’s integrity. Likewise, God sees our lives, our struggles, and our efforts to live according to His wisdom. He will never forget the seeds we sow in obedience to Him.
Lord, thank you for the wisdom you give from above, pure and peace-loving. Help us to walk in integrity and align our lives with your guidance. Grant us to realise what you can achieve through our obedience. May our actions reflect your righteousness and lead others to faith in you. Strengthen us to sow peace and reap a harvest of blessings, for your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
