“Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, ‘Why couldn’t we drive it out?’ He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” ” Matt 17:19-20
Peter’s faith journey began as a small seed, brimming with potential yet in need of growth. When Jesus called him from his fishing boat, Peter didn’t think twice—he left everything behind to follow (Matt 4:18-20). This initial step marked the start of his adventure; Peter’s faith would expand and be strengthened as he learned to trust Jesus more profoundly.
One evening on the Sea of Galilee, Peter faced a significant test of faith. Spotting Jesus walking on the water, he called out, “Lord, if it’s you, command me to come to you on the water.” Jesus answered, “Come.” Peter took that bold step, venturing onto the waves. His faith faltered when he noticed the storm around him, but Jesus reached out, saying, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matt 14:28-31). This moment taught Peter that faith flourishes by stepping out and trusting Jesus, even amidst turbulent waters. Just like a plant, faith requires ongoing care. As Peter journeyed with Jesus, he witnessed miracles, faced challenges, and encountered failures. Yet, each experience deepened his faith, much like a plant growing stronger roots after a storm. By the time of Jesus’ resurrection, Peter’s faith had matured enough to lead others with confidence.
In our own lives, faith operates in a similar way. It begins small, like a seed, and expands as we trust God through each trial. James 2:17 reminds us that “faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” Faith flourishes when we take action, stepping out like Peter and relying on God during uncertain times. Cultivate your faith by trusting in God every day, and watch it evolve into a vibrant, resilient force—rooted, steadfast, and fruitful.
Nurturing your faith involves stepping outside your comfort zone, praying with courage, and believing God for the extraordinary. With each step, faith transforms from mere belief into a lived, unwavering trust in God. As you progress, observe your faith blossom, changing you and influencing those around you. Begin with just a tiny seed of faith.
