But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.James 3:17-18

Yesterday we observed that the wisdom from above is peaceble. It is peace-loving. Today let’s look at the first element of Godly wisdom. Our text says, that heavenly wisdom is, first of all, pure. This means that true wisdom from God is free from corruption, selfish ambition, and deceit. It is not influenced by personal gain or hidden motives but seeks truth and holiness above all else. When we rely on God’s wisdom, our thoughts and decisions are shaped by integrity, sincerity, and a genuine desire to do what is right.

So we are not driven by self-interest, competition, and the desire for power or success at any cost. How does the purity of godly wisdom shows in our day-to-day lives? Here is a situation in the workplace where you notice a colleague taking credit for work you did. It’s tempting to feel hurt or frustrated, perhaps even retaliate by seeking attention for your own contributions. But godly wisdom, grounded in purity, would prompt you to respond with grace and integrity. Rather than being driven by a desire to outdo or expose others, you approach the situation honestly, with humility, and look for a peaceful resolution. This is the wisdom from above that doesn’t seek to manipulate the situation for personal gain but focuses on truth and reconciliation.

Or, think about moments in your personal finances. Maybe you come across an opportunity that seems too good to pass up—a deal that promises high returns with minimal risk. On the surface, it sounds ideal, but something about it doesn’t sit right with you. The purity of godly wisdom urges you to pause and examine it carefully, not letting the allure of easy wealth cloud your judgment. It might mean walking away from an opportunity that doesn’t feel entirely transparent or trusting that God will provide in ways that honour Him.

Father, help us to seek your wisdom above all else. When the world around us tempts us with shortcuts, false promises, or selfish gain, may we always choose the purity of your truth. Cleanse our hearts, Lord, and guide our thoughts and actions, that we may reflect your holiness in all we do. Amen!
