Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.” 1 Tim 6:12

The word of God challenges fatalism, laziness, and passive acceptance of circumstances by urging us to fight the fight of faith. While God’s sovereignty and faithfulness are unquestionable, the Bible consistently emphasises the importance of human responsibility, faith, and obedience in receiving God’s promises and blessings.

There are three prominent lies of the devil in certain cultures that some Christians have embraced.

“Whatever will be will be.”

This statement reflects a fatalistic worldview that suggests everything is predetermined and beyond human influence. However, the Bible teaches that while God is sovereign and His plans are sure, human choices and actions matter. Prov 16:9 says, “In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”

There is a partnership between God’s sovereignty and human responsibility. We are called to make wise decisions and take actions in accordance with God’s will.

“If God says it, it is going to happen.”

This statement can be misinterpreted to imply that God’s promises will automatically come to pass without any human response or responsibility. However, biblical examples often show that God’s promises are conditional on human faith and obedience. For instance, God promised Abraham a son (Gen 17:19), but Abraham and Sarah had to actively believe and cooperate with God’s plan despite their advanced age (Gen 18:10–14).

“Whatever is mine will come to me.”

This belief suggests a passive approach to life, expecting blessings or possessions to come without effort or responsibility. However, the Bible teaches the importance of stewardship and diligence. Jesus’ parable of the talents (Matt 25:14–30) illustrates that individuals are accountable for how they use and multiply the resources God has entrusted to them. Diligence, faithfulness, and obedience are key elements in receiving God’s blessings.

Despite God promising the Israelites the land of Canaan (Gen 17:8), they had to trust God’s provision, obey His commands, and actively conquer the land under Joshua’s leadership (Jos 1–6). David’s victory over Goliath (1 Sam 17) demonstrates that God’s promises of protection and victory are realised through courageous faith and action.

Faith without action is incomplete (Jam 2:17). God’s promises await those who actively trust, obey, and courageously step forward in faith. Let’s embrace our role as partners in God’s plans, knowing that as we fight the good fight of faith, we lay hold of the eternal life He has promised. With diligence, faithfulness, and unwavering trust in His promises, we can conquer giants and inherit His blessings. Let’s live boldly, knowing that through God, all things are possible for those who believe (Mark 9:23)
