Faith Works by Love

“For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.” Galatians 5:6

We all have faith, but what makes it truly powerful? Love. The Bible tells us that faith works by love, meaning love is what brings faith to life. It’s not enough to just believe; our faith has to show up in the way we treat others, the way we act, and the way we serve. Think about it: If you say you have faith but don’t back it up with love, it’s like a car with no fuel. It might look good, but it won’t get anywhere. Love is the fuel that keeps your faith moving and effective.

In 1 Corinthians 13:2, Paul says, “If I have faith that can move mountains but don’t have love, I am nothing.” That’s a big statement! It means that no matter how strong our faith is, if it’s not rooted in love, it doesn’t do anything.

James 2:14-26 addresses the relationship between faith and good works. James writes that faith, if not accompanied by action, is dead. In verses 17 and 26, he famously states, “faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” (James 2:17). He argues that genuine faith will naturally result in good works because true faith transforms a person’s heart and actions. This is not saying that salvation is earned by works, but rather that true faith will produce good deeds as evidence of that faith. James contrasts mere belief, which even demons possess, with a living faith that produces fruit. So, it’s about demonstrating one’s faith through action, showing love, mercy, and kindness to others. He describes a scenario where a brother or sister is in need of basic necessities, such as food or clothing, and someone simply says, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” without actually helping.

“If a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food, if one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?” James 2:15

So, how does your faith show up in your daily life? Are you loving people in your actions, or just talking about it? Whether it’s helping a friend, forgiving someone, or simply showing kindness, let love be the reason behind your faith in action. When you combine faith with love, it becomes real and impactful.

God, thank You for Your amazing love. Help me live out my faith today, not just in what I believe but in how I love others. Let Your love guide me and make my faith come alive. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
