The word of knowledge is one of the revelatory gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:8), where God supernaturally reveals specific information about a person or situation to bring encouragement, healing, or direction. This page is on how to develop the Gift of the Word of Knowledge.

  1. Cultivate Intimacy with God The gift flows out of relationship. Spend time in prayer, worship, and Scripture. The more you know God’s voice, the easier it becomes to recognize when He is revealing something specific.
  2. Ask and Expect Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you” (Luke 11:9). Ask the Holy Spirit to activate this gift in your life. Then expect Him to speak, whether through a thought, image, Scripture, or impression.
  3. Practice in Faith Start small. If you sense God highlighting something about someone, step out in faith and share it, gently and respectfully. You’ll learn through trial and error what is from God and what isn’t.
  4. Use the A.C.T. Framework
    • Apply: Act on what God shows you. Change: Adjust your life to align with what He reveals. Transform: Let the process renew your mind and deepen your trust in Him.

How to Operate in the Gift

1. Discern the Purpose

A word of knowledge is not for showing off, it’s for edification, comfort, or guidance (1 Corinthians 14:3). Ask: Is this to encourage? To bring healing? To intercede?

2. Deliver with Love and Humility

Always test the timing and tone. Sometimes the revelation is meant for private prayer, not public sharing. When you do share, do it humbly, and be open if you miss it.

3. Partner with Other Gifts

The word of knowledge often works alongside wisdom, prophecy, or healing. For example, God may reveal an illness (word of knowledge) and then give you the wisdom or power to pray for healing.

4. Keep a Record

Journal what you receive and what happens. This helps you grow in discernment and recognize patterns in how God speaks to you.

Remember:

You don’t have to be perfect, just willing.

Mistakes are part of learning.

Humility is key.

The goal is always love and building others up (1 Corinthians 13)

“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all… to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit.” —1 Corinthians 12:7–8

Here is a gentle, repeatable 7-day rhythm you can use every week. Nothing is “magic,” each step simply gives the Holy Spirit room to speak and you room to respond. Print it, copy it into your journal, or save it on your phone and tick the boxes as you go.

WEEKLY GROWTH PLAN – “WORD OF KNOWLEDGE”

Key verse to carry all week: “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all… to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit.” 1 Cor 12:7-8

DAY 1 – “TUNE-IN MONDAY” (10-15 min)

1. Stillness: 1 minute of silence, breathing “Come, Holy Spirit.”

2. Worship: play one song that fixes your attention on Jesus, not on the gift.

3. Ask: “Lord, would You give me one word of knowledge for someone this week?”

4. Write: record ANY impression (picture, name, emotion, body part, Scripture, etc.). Date it.

5. Pray: “If this is You, show me the person and the right time.”

DAY 2 – “TARGET TUESDAY” (throughout the day)

1. Carry yesterday’s impression like a quiet “breadcrumb” in your pocket.

2. Watch for “divine coincidences,” someone wearing the colour you saw, mentioning the body part, etc.

3. When you notice a match:a. Approach gently: “Can I share something quick I felt God might be saying?”b. Keep it short (30 sec) and encouraging.c. Ask them if it means anything.

4. Journal outcome: “Hit / Miss / Partial / Seed” (see notes below).

DAY 3 – “TOOL-UP WEDNESDAY” (10 min reading + 5 min prayer)

Read one of the following passages and answer: “What was the need? What did the Spirit reveal? What was the result?”

  • John 4:7-26 (woman at the well)
  • Acts 5:1-11 (Ananias & Sapphira)
  • Acts 9:10-12 (Ananias & Paul)
  • Luke 22:31-34 (Peter’s denial)

Pray: “Make me faithful like Jesus, accurate like Peter, courageous like Ananias.”

DAY 4 – “THANKFUL THURSDAY” (5 min)

1. Re-read Monday’s entry.

2. Thank God for whatever happened, even if nothing seemed to “work.”

3. Ask: “What did I learn about Your voice this time?”

4. Write one sentence of lesson-learned; this becomes your growing “voice map.”

DAY 5 – “FEEDBACK FRIDAY” (optional but powerful)

Text or call the person you spoke to: “Hey, just checking, did that word keep ringing true later? Anything happen?” Record their answer. This closes the loop and builds your discernment database.

DAY 6 – “SHARPEN SATURDAY” (20 min)

1. Meet (in person or online) with one trusted friend who also wants to grow in gifts.

2. Each share one “miss” or “partial” from the week.

3. Pray together: “Lord, give us the rest of the puzzle.”

4. Decide one joint risk you’ll take together next week (e.g., word of knowledge at church, grocery store, etc.).

DAY 7 – “SABBATH SUNDAY”

1. Rest: no striving.

2. In the service or fellowship, stay open but relaxed.

3. If you receive something, follow the same 30-second, love-first rule.

4. End of day: write a one-line summary of the week: “Week of : impressions, delivered, encouraged, lesson.”

SIMPLE JOURNAL CODE

HIT = they confirmed it fully

MISS = no connection at all

PARTIAL = some overlap, unclear

SEED = they don’t see it now, but you sense it may bear fruit later

Aim for faithfulness, not statistics. Even seasoned ministers run 70–90 % “hits.”

SAFETY & CHARACTER GUARDRAILS

1. Never embarrass, diagnose, or deliver scary words publicly.

2. Always ask permission before sharing.

3. Never ask for money or manipulate dates / times to create hype.

4. If the word involves medical or legal details, phrase it as: “I sense God highlighting your left knee, would it be okay to pray for healing?”

5. When in doubt, pray silently first; let peace (Col 3:15) be the umpire.

MONTHLY REVIEW (first Monday of next month)

  1. Re-read all entries.
  2. Highlight repeating themes (colors, body parts, names, Scriptures).
  3. Thank God for growth; repent for any pride or fear.
  4. Set one new micro-goal (e.g., “This month I will risk at work twice”).

Stick to the plan for eight weeks and you will have:

  • 8+ dated impressions
  • Feedback from real people
  • A growing “voice map” unique to how the Spirit speaks to you
  • Increased confidence and love

Remember: the goal is not to become a “gifted person” but a loving person who happens to be gifted. Have fun partnering with the Spirit this week!”
