“But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.” 1 Cor 12:31, (KJV)
The word “covet” means to earnestly desire or eagerly seek after something. It implies a strong, passionate longing or yearning for the spiritual gifts. We’re encouraged to earnestly desire the best spiritual gifts.
These gifts, divided into three categories—speaking, knowing, and doing—are not earned by our merit but are gracious endowments from God.
Speaking Gifts: These enable us to communicate God’s truth boldly and effectively. They include prophecy, tongues, and interpretation of tongues, allowing us to edify and uplift others (1 Cor 14:1-5).
Knowing Gifts: These gifts equip us to discern and understand spiritual truths. The word of wisdom, word of knowledge, and discerning of spirits empower us to navigate life with divine insight and understanding (1 Cor 12:8-10).
Doing Gifts: These gifts empower us to take action and demonstrate God’s power. The gift of faith, gifts of healings, and the working of miracles allow us to manifest God’s miraculous intervention in practical ways (1 Cor 12:9-10).
By coveting these gifts earnestly, we position ourselves to serve God and others more effectively. We’re reminded that these gifts are not about our personal holiness but are manifestations of God’s grace. Therefore, let us seek them with passion and faith, trusting in God’s provision and timing.
Through prayer and faith, we can access these gifts and use them to glorify God and bless those around us. Let’s embrace the fullness of God’s provision and walk in the power of His Spirit, knowing that He equips us for every good work (Eph 4:11-12).
