Concerning the works of men, by the word of your lips, I have kept away from the paths of the destroyer.” Psalm 17:4

In plain words, David is saying: “When I observe how people live, I see how easy it would be to follow them into ruin. But it is your word, Lord, that has kept me from walking where the destroyer goes.”

Notice what he says: “by the word of Your lips.” David is revealing the secret of his strength. It is not his own discipline, cleverness, or moral willpower that keeps him safe; it is the guidance that comes directly from God. The word of God acts as a lamp to illuminate the right way, a compass to point to life, and a guardrail to prevent a fall.

The “paths of the destroyer” are everywhere, roads lined with temptation, compromise, violence, and sin. They are the common habits and choices of men that often appear harmless but lead to ruin. What sets David apart is not that he was inherently stronger or wiser than others, but that he allowed God’s word to shape his decisions, to guard his steps, and to direct his heart.

The lesson for us is simple yet profound: our world is full of seemingly ordinary choices that can quickly become paths to destruction. The only sure way to avoid them is to immerse ourselves in God’s word; letting it speak, guide, and correct us. The power is not in our effort to resist, but in our willingness to let God’s word be our path and our protection.

Today, ask yourself: are the words of God shaping your steps, or are you drifting with the habits of the world?

“My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.” Proverbs 1:10

Paul writes that if anyone, even an angel, preaches a different gospel than the one he preached, let them be accursed. Galatians 1:6-9

Answered prayer, miracles, or impressive spiritual displays are never a substitute for obedience and the truth. Deuteronomy 13:1-3 says, even if a prophet performs signs or wonders, if they urge you to follow other gods, you must not listen.

Let the word of God be the final authority in your life
