Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” Exodus 20:12

Honouring our parents is a divine command that carries a unique promise of long life and well-being. While the Bible instructs us to honour all men, including kings and those in authority (1 Peter 2:17, Romans 13:7), it does not attach the same blessing to honouring others as it does to honouring parents. From the beginning, God established the family as the foundation of society, and obedience to parents, especially while under their tutelage, reflects obedience to Him. The Bible provides clear examples of both honour and dishonour, along with their consequences.

Joseph cared for his father, Jacob, ensuring his well-being in Egypt and fulfilling his dying wish (Genesis 46:29-30, Genesis 50:5-13). Because of his honour, God elevated him to a place of great authority (Genesis 41:39-41). Ruth remained loyal to her mother-in-law, Naomi, working tirelessly to provide for her (Ruth 2:11-12, Ruth 4:13-17). As a result, God blessed Ruth with a godly husband, Boaz, and she became part of the lineage of Jesus (Matthew 1:5). King Solomon showed deep respect for his mother, Bathsheba, giving her a place of honour in his kingdom (1 Kings 2:19). His wisdom and reign flourished because he followed the principle of honouring his elders (Proverbs 1:8-9, Proverbs 3:1-2).

Even Jesus, while on the cross, ensured His mother, Mary, was cared for by entrusting her to the disciple John (John 19:26-27). This act shows that honouring parents is a lifelong responsibility, regardless of circumstances.

The Bible warns of the dangers of dishonour. Ham mocked his father Noah, and his disrespect led to a curse upon his descendants (Genesis 9:20-27). Absalom rebelled against his father, David, and met a tragic end (2 Samuel 15-18). Adonijah attempted to take the throne from his father but was executed for his rebellion (1 Kings 1:5-10, 1 Kings 2:25). Proverbs warns, “The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it” Proverbs 30:17, showing that dishonour leads to destruction.

Honouring our parents means respecting them with our words and actions (Ephesians 6:1-3, Colossians 3:20), caring for them in their old age (1 Timothy 5:4, 1 Timothy 5:8), listening to their godly wisdom (Proverbs 6:20-23), and forgiving their shortcomings (Ephesians 4:32, Colossians 3:13). When we choose honour, we invite God’s blessings, wisdom, and protection. But when we walk in dishonour, we risk the consequences of rebellion.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the parents and guardians you have placed in our lives. Help us to honour them as you command so that we may walk in your blessings. Teach us to respect, love, and care for them, following the example of Jesus. May we never fall into rebellion, but instead, walk in wisdom and humility. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
