Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.” John 6:27

Our text this morning was spoken by Jesus. The day after he had fed 5,000, the crowd noticed that Jesus and His disciples had gone to the other side of the lake, and they followed Him there. When they found Him, Jesus immediately addressed their motives. He told them that they were seeking Him not because they had seen a true sign of God’s power, but because they had eaten their fill of bread. Jesus rebuked them for focusing on the temporary, material provision rather than understanding the deeper spiritual significance of His miracles. Rather, Christ would prefer that His followers become captivated and enraptured by His eternal Word, which is spirit and life. Jesus said, “The words that I speak to you are spirit and life” John 6:63.

Miracles are incredible signs of God’s power and love. They remind us of His presence and authority over all creation. However, our faith should not rest solely on these wonders. Jesus cautioned against focusing too much on the acts themselves, as seen here when He rebuked the crowd seeking Him only for the bread He provided. True faith goes beyond miracles—it is rooted in a relationship with Christ and the assurance of His Word.

While miracles can encourage and strengthen us, they are not the ultimate measure of spiritual maturity. Instead, the Bible directs us to the fruit of the Spirit as evidence of a believer’s right standing with God (Gal 5:22-23). Obedience to His Word and the inner witness of the Holy Spirit confirm our identity as God’s children (Rom 8:16).

We rejoice in the signs and wonders of God, but our hearts rest in the unshakable truth of His promises. Let us reflect on the greatest miracle of all: salvation through Jesus Christ. Remember the words of Jesus, “Rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20).

Lord, thank you for the miracles that demonstrate your power and love. Help me not to seek you only for what you can do but to know and trust you as my Saviour and Lord. Teach me to walk in obedience, reflect your Spirit’s fruit, and rejoice in the assurance of eternal life. Amen.

Take time today to thank God for His work in your life, not just in miraculous moments but in the everyday assurance of His presence. Let His Word guide your steps.

We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Stedfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love.

Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain,
Will your anchor drift or firm remain?

We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Stedfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love.
