We have been studying Ephesians chapter 1, and there were references to Romans 9, which has triggered so many thoughts in me. And a few discussions. This is my response to a friend:

I’ve been reflecting on our discussions about the nature of God’s control and the balance of human responsibilities, and I wanted to share with you my perspective. I believe in a God whose sovereignty is unwavering, and this conviction is rooted in the biblical understanding of His supreme authority and eternal plan. My belief rests on the foundation of God’s sovereignty. The Bible teaches that God is the ultimate authority over all creation. Psalms 103:19 states, “The Lord has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules overall.”
Alongside acknowledging God’s sovereignty, I firmly believe in the significance of human responsibilities and actions. Scriptures like Proverbs 16:9 affirm our agency: “In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Human beings are responsible, accountable, praiseworthy, or blameworthy for what they do. God’s sovereignty does not diminish human accountability.

Importantly, I want to stress that God’s interactions with the world, including responses to our actions, do not suggest a change in His essential nature. James 1:17 beautifully captures this truth: “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

In my understanding, God, with His omniscience, has foreknowledge of our choices. Jeremiah 29:11 reflects God’s plan: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'” While God sets the boundaries and parameters, I see a dynamic and interactive relationship between God and humanity. Our decisions play a role in the unfolding of His plan. Proverbs 19:21 encapsulates this idea: “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”
