“They have rewarded me evil for good, to the spoiling of my soul.” Psalm 35:12
When you do good and receive evil in return, the temptation is for the evil response of others to rob you of the inward benefit of having done what is right.
The devil wants you to become bitter, discouraged or regretful and begin thinking, “Why should I do good to people again?”
But the bible teaches us not to allow another person’s response to determine the condition of our soul.
Paul says:
“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
Galatians 6:9
The enemy would want the wrong response of others to make you stop doing what is right. But their response does not cancel your reward from God.
Jesus puts it even more strongly:
“Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” Matthew 5:44
So the victory is not merely that you continue doing good. It is that you refuse to allow the evil you receive from others to spoil your soul. You keep your heart free, continue in love and leave the recompense with God.
