The New Testament phrase “in Christ” describes a real spiritual relationship, not merely a figure of speech. Everything the believer possesses flows from this union.
Christ is not only for us but in us. Christ’s work for the believer and Christ’s life within the believer. Salvation is more than forgiveness. The risen Christ shares His life with His people through the Holy Spirit. This inner life becomes the source of holiness and spiritual fruit.
So abiding is the secret of fruitfulness. We bear fruit not by self-effort but by abiding in Christ. The branch does not produce life. It receives life from the vine. We therefore grow not by striving independently but by continual dependence upon Christ.
Union with Christ transforms every aspect of salvation. :justification, sanctification, resurrection assurance, communion with God are not isolated blessings. They are all found in Christ himself.
