“But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him.” 1 John 2:5 (NLT)
To participate in God’s covenant Word means to respond to Him with love and trust through obedience. In fact, each time we act on His Word, we express our love in a tangible way. Obedience is not simply about doing the right thing—it is the joyful response of a heart that knows and loves God. By doing so, it draws us deeper into communion with Him and affirms that we truly belong to Him.
God’s presence is most fully experienced by those who follow His leading. Indeed, as 1 John 3:24 declares, “Those who obey God’s commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them.” This abiding relationship is marked by closeness, not distance; by unity, not separation. Therefore, as we walk in His Word, we walk in His presence.
1 John 4:16 says, “We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.” This is the beautiful cycle of covenant living—God loves us, we receive that love, and it moves us to walk in step with Him.
The story of Abraham helps us understand this on a practical level. When God asked Abraham to offer Isaac, he acted promptly, trusting the God who had given the promise. Abraham’s obedience was a declaration of his confidence in God’s character. He knew that God’s instructions would always lead to life and blessing. As a result, Abraham received a renewed promise that his descendants would be as countless as the stars and that all nations would be blessed through him. His trust and obedience opened the way for God’s covenant to be fulfilled in him and through him.
This same pattern applies to our lives today. When we read a word like Matthew 6:14–15, where Jesus teaches us to forgive, we are being invited to live in the freedom and healing that forgiveness brings. A believer who chooses to forgive from the heart is choosing peace, choosing restoration, and choosing to walk in God’s nature. As they pray for those who wronged them and release the offence, they create space for grace and healing to flourish. Obedience always enriches our lives with the beauty of God’s character.
God’s Word always points us toward life, blessing, and deeper fellowship with Him. Whether it’s in forgiving, giving, serving, or choosing peace, every act of obedience clearly affirms that we live in Him and He lives in us. We don’t obey to earn love—we obey because we are loved, and because His love now dwells within us. This is why obedience is more than just action—it is faith made visible. It is the bold response of a heart that trusts God completely. When we act on His Word, we are not double-minded or wavering—we are demonstrating full confidence in His truth. Obedience is the very proof, not only to ourselves but to the world around us, that we believe God, that we belong to Him, and that we are truly living in His love.
Today, take time to reflect on His Word. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what God is inviting you to walk out in faith. His instructions are always good, always purposeful, and always filled with love. With each step of obedience, your relationship with Him will grow stronger, your peace will deepen, and your life will reflect His glory.
Father, thank you for the joy and privilege of walking in your Word. Help me to recognise your voice and respond with a willing heart. Let your love so fill my life that obedience becomes my natural response. I want to walk in fellowship with you daily and bring delight to your heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
