You must have heard people describe hope as desire combined with expectation means that hope arises when we deeply wish for something, while also anticipating or believing that it is possible or likely to happen. It’s the emotional combination of wanting something to occur and having some level of faith or belief that it will. This blend of desire and expectation fuels our optimism and drive to pursue our goals.

In Christianity, hope carries a deeper spiritual significance that transcends mere desire or expectation. Christian hope is rooted in faith in God’s promises, trusting that He will fulfill them in His perfect timing. It is not based on wishful thinking or personal ambition but on the belief in God’s goodness, His sovereignty, and the assurance of eternal life through Jesus Christ.

Christian hope is a confident expectation, not in the material world or outcomes, but in God’s love, grace, and ultimate redemption. It is a hope that anchors the soul, providing strength and perseverance through trials, with the firm belief that God’s plan is greater than any temporary circumstance.

The Bible says, “And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” Rom 5:5. Our hope is secure and unshakable because it is anchored in the love of God, which is made real and tangible through the Holy Spirit. Unlike earthly hope that can be disappointed or dashed when expectations are not met, hope in God is rooted in God’s unchanging love and His faithfulness. This hope provides us with confidence, peace, and assurance, knowing that God’s love never fails and that His promises will be fulfilled.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Rom 15:13
