Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty (conceited, self-important, exclusive), but associate with humble people [those with a realistic self-view]. Do not overestimate yourself.” Rom 12:16 (AMP)

Have you ever missed God’s guidance because you thought you knew better? -Even when the Holy spirit is speaking loudly through every available voices!

This past Sunday, God reminded me of the importance of listening and humility in relationships. After service at our new church in Walton, I joined one of our members for a chat at a nearby restaurant. Confident that I was parking in a free space, I left my car in a bay marked for parking suspension, assuming it wouldn’t take effect until two days later.

About 30 minutes into our conversation, I received a call from a church member who doesn’t speak much English. He told me, “Move the car; there is a problem.” At first, I didn’t fully understand what he meant, but I stepped out of the restaurant to hear him out. He explained that a ticket officer had been issuing fines to cars in that spot the previous day.

Initially, I didn’t realise the issue, as the parking suspension hadn’t yet begun. However, out of respect for him, I decided to move my car. It was only later, after returning to my meal and discussing it with the member I was dining with, that I discovered my original parking spot only allowed for 30 minutes. Had I stayed there, I would have received a ticket!

How often do we dismiss advice or help from others, thinking we know better?

Our text this morning is very clear: “Be not wise in your own conceits.” Proverbs 19:20 says, “Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.”

In our relationships with others, we cannot afford to “be high-minded.” True relationships thrive on humility and valuing everyone, regardless of their background or status. The gospel of Jesus Christ is received with joy by the poor, the lowly, and those who are often overlooked. In Acts 4:13, “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.” Being with Christ opens us up for Him to be used for other regardless of our status or background.

Had I dismissed the concern of this dear brother—thinking I knew better—I would have missed God’s provision through his simple yet timely warning. Let us always remain humble, willing to listen, and ready to learn from everyone. The Bible says, “The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.”

Heavenly Father, thank you for reminding us to stay humble and listen to those around us. Help us to value others, reflect Christ’s humility, and remain open to your guidance in every situation. May we continue to live and preach the gospel with the same spirit of humility that our Lord Jesus Christ demonstrated, reaching those who need Him most.
