In the currency of time, idle moments exact an unseen toll – an expense whose true cost remains obscured until the final audit of our days.

Jesus says, “And I tell you this, that you must give an account on judgment day of every idle word you speak. The words you say now reflect your fate; either you will be justified by them, or you will be condemned” Matt 12:36-37

Idle chat! I’m not adept at that kind of chatting; engaging in chitchat with no focus. The enemy waits for our unguarded moment to take charge of our time and tongue.

Idle words can include every careless, purposeless, entertaining, insincere, or exaggerated talk and undisciplined speech. Ephesians 5:4 adds a few categories of idle words: obscene stories, foolish talk, jesting, and coarse jokes, which are not appropriate for children of God. I particularly appreciate the way the NLT translation puts it: “Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes —these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God.”

These are not for you: Being intentional with speech helps to avoid idle words that may lead astray. Walk away from office chitchat, lobby hangout jokes, and toilet speeches.

The Bible encourages believers to engage in discussions about Psalms, songs, and spiritual matters instead.

“Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord.”
Eph 5:19
