“And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way.” – 2 Thess 2:6-7
I believe the presence of the church serves as a restraining force, preventing the revelation of the man of lawlessness (Antichrist) until the appointed time. While the church remains, darkness cannot prevail. The bible says, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” – John 1:5
In Matthew 13:33 (also in Luke 13:21), Jesus shared a concise parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of meal until it leavened all the dough.” This parable uses an everyday activity to convey profound truths about the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven.
Like leaven silently transforming dough, the influence of the kingdom of heaven may not be immediately apparent but is powerful and transformative, altering the very nature of what it permeates.
This parable illustrates how the Church of Christ impacts the world. Just as leaven works from within dough, traditionally associated with malice but here representing an influence for good, it changes societies. Christian values have influenced attitudes towards slavery, poverty, and social justice, leading to significant legislative changes and societal shifts. Churches initiated and actively support initiatives such as food banks, homeless shelters, medical clinics, and educational programs aimed at empowering individuals and families in need. Missionary efforts worldwide often involve building schools and supporting educational initiatives, improving access to education in underserved communities. Most known lasting changes have directly or indirectly come from the church.
The mention of “three measures of meal” in the parable signifies abundance and suggests that the kingdom of heaven is universal, meant for all people and capable of affecting the entire world (Gen 18:6). Churches frequently promote strong family values and community cohesion, encouraging healthy relationships, support networks, and mutual care among members of the congregation and broader community. They advocate for vulnerable groups such as refugees, immigrants, the elderly, and those with disabilities, lobbying for policies that protect their rights and dignity, fostering inclusivity and compassion within society. The presence of Christians on earth serves as a deterrent to the full manifestation of evil.
On a personal level, the parable encourages believers to let the principles and values of the kingdom of heaven completely permeate their lives, transforming them from within and influencing their surroundings.
