James 3:2 says, “We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.”
Our tongues hold immeasurable power, capable of shaping destinies and building or tearing down. May the Lord grant us the strength to pause before we speak so that our words may reflect His grace and wisdom. In the stillness of our hearts, may His Spirit guide us to speak life, offer encouragement, and express kindness.
Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. Physical wounds can heal, but the emotional injury caused by the tongue lingers long. We are not to speak out everything our eyes see or speak out everything our ears hear. Be more ready to hear than to speak. Even a fool, when he holds his tongue, is regarded as a wise person (Proverbs 17:28). Hold your tongue and use it wisely to speak words of grace seasoned with salt.
In 2 Samuel 6:12–23, David brings the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem with joyous dancing before the Lord. His wife, Michal, disapproves, mocking him for his exuberance. David defends his actions, stating that he danced before the Lord, who chose him as king. Michal’s disrespectful words resulted in her remaining childless until her death, highlighting the consequences of misusing the tongue.
In moments of frustration or anger, may the Holy Spirit remind us to pause and seek His guidance before we speak. May the Lord grant us the humility to admit when we are wrong and the wisdom to apologise if our words have caused harm.
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:21
